The Julian calendar, introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BC, had been in use for over a millennium. However, it miscalculated the solar year by about 11 minutes per year. Over centuries, these minutes added up, causing significant drift from the astronomical seasons. By the 16th century, the error amounted to approximately 10 days.
